Looking for the best Chemical Engineering school in the world?

According to the 2013 QS World University Rankings by Subject, it’s the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

In all of the factors considered, such as research, teaching, facilities, and even employability and internationalization, MIT received 5 stars (the perfect score); its comprehensive focus and very high research output solidified its top position in chemical engineering excellence. It received a 5+ QS Star Rating and got an overall rating of 95.10.

As the pioneer in the field of Chemical Engineering, MIT leads in chemical engineering research with “groundbreaking investigations on nanotechnology, biomedical processes, molecular computation, and catalysis.” Home to world-class researchers and state-of-the-art laboratories, research projects espousing collaborative work with other disciplines within MIT and other research organizations and commercial enterprises are being undertaken by their ChemE students.

World-class education of course comes with a hefty price: the average annual tuition fees in MIT costs around USD41,000 (PhP1,640,000) for undergraduate studies and USD43,000 (PhP1,720,000). If you are interested for an MIT scholarship, you may try applying for their financial aid.

Closely behind in the second place is University of California Berkeley (92.60). Three universities from UK rounded up the top 5: Imperial College London (90.50), University of Oxford (88.80), and University of Cambridge (88.40).

Universities from Asia also made it to the top 10. National University of Singapore (NUS) received an overall rating of 87.60. Kyoto University and The University of Tokyo, both from Japan, obtained overall ratings of 86.40 and 86.20, respectively.

ETH Zurich (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology) and Delft University of Technology (in Netherlands) completed the top 10 list of best chemical engineering schools.

Two other universities in the top 20 received a 5+ QS Star Rating: The University of Queensland (12th place) in Australia and Seoul National University (17th place) in South Korea. Ivy League schools (Princeton, Stanford and Yale) were also included in the top 30 and garnered 5 QS Star Ratings.

Here’s the thing that makes life so interesting: The Theory of Evolution claims that “only the strong shall survive”. Maybe so, maybe so. But the Theory of Competition says “just because they’re the strong doesn’t mean they can’t get their asses kicked”. That’s right. See, what every long shot come from behind underdog will tell you is this: The other guy may in fact be the favorite, the odds may be stacked against you. Fair enough… But what the odds don’t know is this isn’t a math test. This is a completely different kind of test. One where passion has a funny way of trumping logic. So before you step up to the starting line, before the whistle blows and the clock starts ticking, just remember: out here, the results don’t always add up. No matter what the stats may say and the experts may think and the commentators may have predicted, when the race is on, all bets are off. Don’t be surprised if someone decides to flip the script and take a pass on yelling “Uncle”. And then suddenly, as the old saying goes, “We got ourselves a game.”

Watch it and cry. And cross your fingers for a comeback. And cry some more.

Amazon, which recently entered the world of original broadcast content, has subverted television’s traditional “pilot season” by forgoing a staggered release schedule in favor of plunking all fourteen of its pilots onto its website at once. The idea is for audiences to watch the eight comedies and six animated shows for free, and then help the company decide which options are the most promising for long term development. Just a tip: Alpha House features appearances from John Goodman and Bill Murray.

Back from our mini fieldtrip around Calamba and Sta. Rosa. Finished with the interview for my summer internship (I hope I get in!) in Hyperkem (oh, the irony…). We also found a nice place where I could stay during my OJT. We did some shopping in Nuvali before going home. :)
