Congratulations to UP ALCHEMES for successfully holding Research Fair 2012, the biggest high school science research fair in the country!
RF 2012 with the theme “Flashpoint: Igniting the Nation’s Next Wave of Innovations” received immense participation with more than 420 participants coming from 38 participating high schools from all over the country. It was a two-day event composed of the exhibit presentations, closed-door defense, workshops for both students and advisers, and the final presentation of the Top 5 teams. It also featured performances from the UP Streetdance Club, UP Concert Chorus, UP Repertory Company, and UP ALCHEMES’ own creative groups.
Out of 127 research entries from all over the country, these five research projects emerged to the top:

Free day!

I’m supposed to be doing an encoding job for the UP College of Education today, but they said the program won’t even start up because of a system error. The programmer would be arriving today, but that would still be around 4PM. My shift is 8AM-6PM. And that wouldn’t really guarantee that the system will be fixed sometime soon since they still have got to find out what the bug is.

I’m earning PhP50/hr in this encoding/archiving thing. Not bad, actually. It’s actually higher compared to the compensation for student assistants in UP. At the end of this typing gig, I’m planning to buy an 1 Tb Seagate external hard drive. It’s finally arriving this Thursday. Yey!

Now I’m at the Engineering library, randomly surfing the internet. Later I’ll finish my problem set in Chem 154 (Physical Chemistry). Plus we have a meeting, a photoshoot, and a General Assembly in UP ALCHEMES. I’m thrilled.

Two Gawad Chanselor Awardees this year are Alchemists. How cool is that?!
Congratulations to Mr. Jhud Aberilla and Ms. Nikki Yazon. UP! UP!

In an attempt to refresh my photoshop skills, I stumbled upon an online tutorial showing how to create a VHS style image.
And I shouldn’t be doing this right now and just be studying ES13 instead, but what the hell. I’m on a roll.

Tambayan Makeover!

To clean up the mess Engg Week 2010 has brought to our tambayan, the Execom decided to do general cleanup after the resumption of classes.

It was a lot easier than I expected. We started sorting things out at around 1PM, and at around 2:30PM, we were done redoing the layout of the tambayan. Whew! It’s such a relief to see the tambayan free from unnecessary clutter. Instead, now it has more breathing space.

We got tired with the good ol’ layout of our tambs wherein the two tables were parallel with each other, and the two storage benches were on both ends. After some tinkering, we decided to have an L-layout. All in all, it’s the fourth layout of the tambayan since our exodus from the old Yakal tambayan complex.

We already got rid of the balikbayan boxes which were totally of no use to us, except being hoarders of space in the tambayan. They were used for the rummage sale of our Finance committee.

Also, the tambayan seemed to brighten up after we have moved the calendar-slash-bulletin board (a project of batch A-cubed) to its original position.

New year, new start.

I hope that this year would bring more success to UP ALCHEMES. Surely, I could see a brighter future for us Alchemists. :)
